Genocide Unit Response
THE PIGEON
In class, we showed you the short film The Pigeon, which is a story of a man in a desperate situation and the spontaneous act of courage that rescues him, at least for the moment. Although the film is short (about 8 minutes), it contains a great deal of meaning and ambiguity.
Using specific evidence from the film and the content of our unit on genocide, please respond to the following in a one-to-two page essay.
You are the writer and director of the film The Pigeon. You are speaking to a high school human rights class about your work, and you are asked this question:
What is the central message or theme of the film? In other words, what is the most important idea with which you want your audience to leave the film? In addition, describe how you have used symbolic imagery to impart this message
In responding to this question, you will need to do the following. Read all directions before beginning your response.
1. Identify and explain what for you is the film’s central theme or message as it relates to rescue. This will serve as the thesis for your response.
2. Identify and analyze the important symbolic imagery that supports this central theme and enables the audience to have a deeper comprehension of the importance of human rights and rescuers in an environment where basic morality is being challenged.
